Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before creating our title opening sequence I had to make sure that I had significant research on this genre of film in order to make sure that I could realise the possible potential of this genre in terms of creating a dramatic effect for a viewing audience. Whilst doing this secondary research I managed to find a link throughout the trailers/title opening sequences that I viewed which was the ability and the precision of added dramatic effects throughout these sequences such as music, tension through added characters and other possible ways.

Thrillers contain a majority of things in order to make sure that they separate themselves from the genre of Horror by such things as one particular character who is portrayed as a stereotypical character who is easily spotted within the film. These stereotypical characters are usually humans throughout thriller films which is the main difference of content between a thriller and horror. Also a difference between these two genres is that a thriller film would be created in order to entertain an audience whereas horror films are based around the fact of making the audience jump and “freak” out as much as possible whilst still carrying on watching the film.

This video link shows the usage of the things I have described above such the added effects through music, tension through sound effects and other ways of creating dramatic tension for the audience.

 Titles

The title of our film (Grimaldi) doesn't allow the audience to be able to develop an idea of what the film is about because most films give a slight detail as to either what the film is about/based on or a film name gives the audience the ability to instantly develop their own version of the story of any particular film name.

Blood Feast Font. The style of this font seems more adapted to a horror film and therefore realising this, change had to be made in order to keep the distinct difference between horror and thriller films.

The image above shows the changes that I made in order to still keep the style of this font without drafting the genre of this film to a horror before it has even been show to the audience.

Also our group managed to follow the original forms and conventions of a Thriller was by the film poster which I managed to create using Adobe Photoshop. By making sure that the background of this poster was black, I enabled myself to add colours such as red and white in order to make it stand out to people who may walk past this poster and therefore hopefully realising that this poster is infront of them and developing a sudden interest in this film.

Location
The chosen location of our film enabled us to create a close environment around the characters enabling us to make the audience become more interacted with the film and therefore hopefully enjoying this more. The particular we used was inside Farah's house. This was decided due to the fact that we knew we would be able to film inside her house whilst utilising the space and also the things within the house such as the stairs and the hallway. These two allowed Moe to film Samatha whilst she was walking down the stairs, and then from the hallway in order to then show the audience this character walking downstairs and then reaching the door but only to be suddenly grabbed by a mysterious hand.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents the social group of “attention seeker” due to the fact that Samantha isn’t described as being within the main stereotypical social groups such as jock, pre, emo or other. She is described as being a person who strives for attention from those people around her, whether this be her boyfriend, friends or family members in order to be recognised by everyone. By doing this, Samantha manages to gather up the self believe that she is an important person in the infrastructure of her friends group and also within her household.
Samantha spends her spare time listening to music and reading magazines in order to make sure that she is up to date with what is new both in the “celebrity world” but also within the music industry. Again I believe that this enhances the fact that by making sure she knows these things, she is able to distribute these facts and pieces of information to the people involved in her life and therefore come across as a generally knowledgeable figure.
Also making sure that at the start of the research of our title opening sequence that we knew the age range of our audience (15-25)
Below is an image of a group of people aged between 15-25 who may be interested by our film due to the fact that they will not find it both too "old fashioned" nor too modern so that they will be able to understand the storyline and also have a connection with the characters within the film.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that the media institution that might distribute my media product would be Screen Gems due to the fact that after researching this company, I realised that they distribute films in the same genre as our own whilst also distributing horror films aswell.

" Screen Gems is an American subsidiary company of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group that has served several different purposes for its parent companies over the decades since its incorporation."

Also with their background distributing Animations from the years 1940-1946 I believe that they could enhance the toy clown used within the my audio/visual product to its best abilities. This could such things as showing the audience the clown walking around the house of Samantha Evans but then realising that it was "Just a dream".

Who would be the audience for your media product?

As shown by my audience profile earlier in my blog, the audience for my media product would be someone who aged 15 above who enjoys socialising with friends and therefore could go to the cinema and watch our film.

Below is an image of a group of friends aged 15-17 watching a film which is also the main target audience of our title opening sequence.

Marcus 15, Henry 17, Joanne 16, Jacob 16
(In order from left to right)

As shown in the image above, this group of friends enjoy going to the cinema and watching films and are all aged from 15 above. This means each one of this group of friends would be able to watch and hopefully enjoy going to the cinema and watching our film.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Our title opening sequence was aged at a age audience of 15 and over. The main character throughout this sequence is a main example of our target audience in that our target audience will be teenagers that enjoy socialising with friends and are currently studying at college or any other form of higher education. Our villain throughout this audio/visual product is actually Samantha Evan’s boyfriend (Trevor) who is shown briefly in the character profile which is shown on my blog but isn’t shown in our title opening sequence but can be seen further within the film.
The music selected for the title opening sequence managed to develop the atmosphere so that when the audience views the product, they are embracing the thriller atmosphere that as a group we created in order to make sure that not only is this product recognised as a thriller but also that the product is recognised as dramatic encounter between the characters and the audience.
Using different camera shots throughout the title opening sequence means that we was able to capture each moment from a different angle, enabling us to later chose the best possible angle to deliver the most dramatic effects for the audience. Due to the fact that this film was a low budgeted film, there are limited SFX because the main sound effect heard within the piece, comes from the toy clown which we bought in order to film the project.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout the entire process of developing and creating this title opening sequence I used the following programmes below in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Google - Used in order to search things needed in order to upgrade the title opening sequence  such as music.

Adobe Photoshop - Used in order to create the film poster that I managed to develop and also shows the ways in which I developed it.

Blogger - I used this in order to keep a up-to-date log of the work and the work process which myself and my group went through in order to create and develop our product.

Adobe Premiere Elements - Used in order to edit both audio/visual clips captured to produce our final title opening sequence.

As shown by the list above, I managed to use a vast amount of different programmes in order to make sure that each element within the title opening sequence was distributed as high quality as possible.

Back of Sony SR220

The image above shows the camera that we used in order to capture each audio/visual moment in order to create the final product. Such things as the zoom and also the night light settings on this particular camera, enabled the group to record outside of the house location seen within the title opening sequence and therefore again show our audience a different point of view to keep things interesting.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Studying AS Media for the first time was a different experience in terms of the way in which the work I had to do was kept and marked (via Blog) Although studying OCR Media Level 3 for two years, enabled me to use previous skills gained from using high quality camera/editing equipment and also the other areas of media which I had expereince in such as Music Radio.
The progression from my preliminary task to my final product is mainly down to the fact that I decided to swap groups in order to make sure that I and people within my new group could benefit from each other’s creative skills within the media industry. This is clearly shown because the editing mainly done by both Sam and Moe was of a high quality considering the lighting level in which the film was shot in. Whereas I and Farah managed to do a lot of research and planning in depth in order to make sure that we covered the vast areas created by the media industry.
Therefore I believe that the main things that I learnt throughout this process is make sure that within a group you are able to realise each other’s strengths and weaknesses and be able to reassure each other in that we can produce good quality pieces of work.

Shot List

Throughout our title opening sequence we decided to use a varied amount of shots in order to create a bigger quality product. Also by showing that as a group we had concidered showing our audiences the best view of each part of action, we believe that this shows the best possible concern in delivering a high quality title opening sequence.

A list below shows the types of shots we used within our title opening sequence:

  • Over  the shoulder
  • Medium Close-up
  • Close-up
  • Shot reverse shot

These shots plus a few more, allowed the product to project a more entertaining element for our target audience whilst still coming under the selected Genre which happened to be "Thriller".

Examples of Shots Used

Over the Shoulder

Medium Close-Up

Close-Up

Being able to use these any other shots enables a better perspective for the audience in which to watch a film or any other moving image medium. Other camera shots are used to order to show the audience the audio/visual product as though they are experiencing the moving footage as if they were placed within the sequence that can see at any given time.

Peep Show - 1st Person Perspective

The image above shows the well-known programme Peep Show utalising its decision to film in 1st person perspective in that they make their audience feel as though they are placed in the same situations as each character within the programme. By closely researching this method of filming, myself and my other group members were able to realiese that the view point of our main character, would be best shown to the audience in a 1st person perspective in order to make sure that the audience felt more interacted with title opening sequence.

Final Synopsis - Grimaldi

Due to new simplar and better quality ideas as a group we decided to slightly make changes from our original synopsis in order to make sure that we was happy with our final product as a group. This final synopsis can be seen below.

Our title opening sequence begins in a girls bedroom were we are given a view of the room twice, once from an audience's point of view and the second is a more dramatic entrance to the room including the added visual effects to emphasise the element of a thriller to the audience. We then see the main character (Samantha Evans) tossing and turning in her bed until she gets fed up with the clown's melody and therefore projects this anger and throws the clown to the floor and goes back to sleep.

(Alarm clock goes off)

A view of the alarm clock shows that the alarm clock in going off and therefore Samantha has to wake up in order to start her day. After turning off this alarm clock and turning the lights back on, Samantha realises that the clown she threw on the floor is back on the side next to her alarm clock. Therefore due to her uncertainty she grabs this toy clown and takes it downstairs and throws it in the bin believe she has got rid of this abnormal toy. Only to realise once she goes to shut the front door to go back inside, a dark hand is projected infront of the door stopping it from closing and causing Samantha to scream in both desperation for someone to help her and fear of what or who could be behind the other side of this door.

Samples of Typography

The images above show the types of fonts we downloaded in order to achieve the best quality titles throughout our title opening sequence.

Original Title

Edited Title (Edited by Taylor L Beahan & Farah A Warda)

Showing the transformation from the original font that we used to the final font which we showed on our title opening sequence. This font was chosen because we felt that the font suited our type of product the most but we needed to remove some of the drip of "blood" in order to sustain the high levels of expectation we had for our product.
